The Destination
Lake Monduran is situated some 20km west of Gin Gin some three and a half hours north of Brisbane.
The closest airports are Bundaberg and Hervey Bay. We offer a free pick up service from the Bundaberg Airport. Gin Gin has four motels I caravan park and two hotels.
We own the Gin Gin Hotel and offer basic budget styled accommodation. You can upgrade to one of the motels or you can stay at the dam in the caravan park camping. The park at the dam also offers house rental, cabin rental, caravan sites, camping sites and house boat rental. We can organize you all accommodation details for you giving you an unbiased account of the styles of accommodation available.
The Arena
Lake Monduran has formed on the old bed of the Kolan River and is dammed in the main basin by the Fred Haigh dam and below the dam the Kolan river continues on to come out on the coast just north of Bundaberg. You can travel through the dam for some 40km upstream and un like other dams doesn’t have the feel of an artificial environment. The Fred Haigh dam has a capacity of 562000 mega litres and you can get a current update of the lakes level by visiting the Sunwater web site- http://www.sunwater.com.au/water_store.htmat .
The lake covers approximately 5340 hectares and when full has an average depth of 11.0 m. It holds 17% more water than Sydney Harbour. The lake has large numbers of trees and surrounded by weed beds that the barra love to inhabit.
The Bait
The main source of food for the barramundi is the freshwater garfish and boney bream. Other fish inhabit the waterway as well including cat fish sleepy cod and small perch species.
Other species include turtle’s platypus and eels.
