The reefs off Bundaberg are fishing great for all the reef species. This time off year produces ideal weather patterns which inturn promote flat seas ideal for safe travel on the ocean.

The south westerlies usually drop out in the afternoon to produce safe conditions to venture out in the afternoon and early evening to catch small squire and snapper. These fish are great on the plate and are usually complimented with some nice reef fish that also make a great meal.

These fish can be caught on soft plastics or baits whatever pulls your chain it’s up to you but its is worth trying the plastics if you haven’t already as it is great fun deceiving these fish on lures.

The fishing at lake Monduran is still tough to say the least, whilst there are a few occasional fish caught there are still many cast performed between each capture.

We have caught mainly smaller fish on the Rapala suspending lures up close to the edge and the backs of bays. Still many fish are caught on the larger plastics worked in deep and shallow water, this being said it is best to have a good side scan sonar to find those fish.

Some big fish have been caught in the last months some fish between 120cm and 130cm but they’re very few and far between.

Impoundment Winter Blues

If you have had it with the rigors of fishing the impoundments chasing big barramundi during the winter maybe it’s time to try something different and head out into the salt water estuaries to find your quarry.

I teamed up with Craig Griffiths to work on the Fitzroy River system at Rockhampton.

This river runs from Port Alma on the coast some 35 nautical miles up to the city of Rockhampton.

The recent rains have increased the water level at Lake Monduran by about 1m. The south easterlies from last week have made fishing tough but you can still pull one from the dam with a committed effort.

We have been working top water with Bill Clarkes Bugs, Rapala X-Walks and tango dancers very successfully. These lures are great in the shallow weeded areas and if you use lots of pauses in your retrieve makes for an exhilarating surface bite.
